WHAT IS KIRBY KNOWN FOR?

Kirby Parts

Aside from his cute round and pink little shape that everyone adores, Kirby is recognized for his incredible ability to inhale various objects, enemies, and even powerful attacks only to spit them out with force.

I'll breathe in your pathetic bombs and send them right back at you!

He can even copy abilities! Despite his size, Kirby is a pretty powerful ball of cheerful fury. No wonder a lot of gamers like him!

This iconic Nintendo character has not only wowed Dream Land but has managed to capture our hearts since the early '90s. He’s known for his heroism and epic adventures in  all sorts of videogames and mini games!

KIRBY'S MANY GAMES

Kirby Games

Despite his real age (Kirby’s been around for a really, really long time), gamers just can’t get enough of Kirby. There are 39 games in the Kirby franchise. The main games are side-scrolling platformers where the pink poofball has to run, jump, and attack enemies.

Kirby is also the king of minigames! He has puzzle games, racing games, and even motion-sensor-technology-based games. His round shape makes him really versatile as a kawaii gaming character.

WHO CREATED KIRBY?

Kirby Creator

The beloved Kirby was created by none other than Masahiro Sakurai, who was working for HAL Laboratory at the time (just to clarify, Kirby is owned by both HAL Laboratory and Nintendo). Sakurai is also the mastermind behind the popular Super Smash Bros. series where Kirby continues to amaze players with his awesome abilities. If you'd like to check out goodies from the maker of Kirby, you can head on over to our Nintendo collection

HOW OLD IS KIRBY?

Kirby Party

Surprisingly, age is but a number in Dream Land. Kirby made his first appearance in the game 'Kirby's Dream Land' on Game Boy, back in April 1992. This makes Kirby over three decades old in real-world years. As for his age in the Dream Land universe, that remains a mystery.

Kirby Strawberry

In Japan, Kirby is often introduced as a wakamono (a young person). Sometimes he’s even called a baby with his high pitched sounds and his cute “poyo.”

I feel like some apple pie!

We can’t blame people for thinking that Kirby is young - after all the pink ball always seems to have a lot of spritely energy with the way it keeps huffing and puffing and saving the universe!

CELEBRATING KIRBY ANNIVERSARIES

Nintendo loves Kirby so much, it goes all out whenever Kirby has an anniversary! The company decided to throw a big music festival to celebrate the pink cream puff’s 30th year anniversary in 2022. It was a huge success with a lot of big Japanese artists celebrating.

WHAT IS KIRBY'S GENDER?

Kirby Gender

Unfortunately, nobody really knows. Though the American branch of Nintendo always calls Kirby a “he,” Japan always uses gender-neutral pronouns when talking about Kirby. Kirby’s gender doesn’t matter that much anyway - we love the cutie whatever gender it might take.

WHERE IS KIRBY FROM?

Kirby lives in a dome-shaped little house in Dream Land! It’s a pretty bright and happy place. Other characters from the game like King Dedede and Waddledee also live in Dream Land. This country can be found in the puffball’s home planet, Planet Popstar.

WHAT WAS KIRBY SUPPOSED TO BE?

Kirby Shapes

Fun fact! Did you know that Kirby was initially just a placeholder sprite during the game's development? When the game was being made, Kirby was just a simple blob named "Popopo". However, the creators were so charmed by this little round creature that they decided to keep it as the lead character of the game! The name "Kirby" was chosen later, paying homage to John Kirby, a legal defender of Nintendo in a copyright infringement lawsuit.

WHY DOES KIRBY HAVE POWERS?

Now, this is where it gets interesting! Kirby's power to copy his enemies' abilities was introduced a year after his introduction in the game  'Kirby's Adventure' (1993). It was a game-changing twist that became Kirby's signature move.

To get this far you must have a-MAZE-ing skill Tee hee hee!!

Why, you ask? Well, this mechanism was intended to offer diverse gameplay and problem-solving elements, giving players a myriad of strategies to conquer every level. So, inhale, adapt, and repeat is the name of the game!

IS KIRBY A VILLAIN OR A HERO?

Kirby Villain or Hero

How could you even think of Kirby as a villain with his pink rosy cheeks and bright eyes? The round little ball is the defender of Dream Land, often saving his home from various threats like the mischievous King Dedede or the sinister Dark Matter. But Kirby's real superpower lies in his never-ending spirit, reminding us that heroism comes in all shapes and sizes - and sometimes, in very round and pink packages.

WHAT IS EVIL KIRBY CALLED?

Shadow Kirby

Meet Shadow Kirby, our hero's dark, mirror version. Originating from the Mirror World, he is a doppelganger with similar abilities but exudes a more ominous vibe.

You are sneaky, but I will not be distracted by your under-handed tactics.

Despite his sinister appearance, he is not inherently evil and has teamed up with Kirby to fight greater threats!

WHAT IS THE RAREST KIRBY ABILITY?

Kirby Crash

Kirby has acquired numerous abilities throughout his adventures, but one of the rarest "Crash.” When Kirby uses Crash, he destroys all enemies on screen with a powerful explosion. It's hard to find but extremely satisfying to use! The only problem is that this ability can’t be used as often as you’d like!

DOES KIRBY HAVE A WEAKNESS?

Kirby Weakness

While Kirby might seem invincible with his copy abilities and regenerative health (who wouldn't want a delicious tomato for a health boost?), he isn't without weaknesses. In games like 'Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards,' Kirby becomes vulnerable when inhaling large or powerful enemies. However, he usually turns this weakness into a strength by copying their abilities!

HOW TO DRAW KIRBY

It's super easy learning how to draw Kirby! After all, this cute puffball has simple lines and shapes. All you have to do is grab a pencil and some paper, then load up a tutorial video online! You can spend an entire afternoon just learning how to draw Kirby.

KIRBY CHARACTERS

Kirby Characters

There are actually a whole lot of characters in the Kirby franchise! That shouldn’t be all the surprising seeing how many games and shows Kirby has. Though we can’t really tackle all the characters now (we’ll do that in another fun blog post), we can talk about the main characters that Kirby comes across all the time!

Kirbies

Kirbies

Sometimes everyone just wants to be Kirby. These are different variations of Kirby that come out when you play multiplayer! They come in different colors and are all part of Kirby.

King Dedede

King Dedede

King Dedede might come from Dream Land, but this duck-like character is actually Kirby’s arch-enemy and ally. He actually has a long-standing grudge against Kirby and the two pretty much have a love-hate relationship. King Dedede does have a lot of respect for Kirby though! He considers the poofball as the true hero of Dream Land.

Banana Waddle Dee

Banana Waddle Dee

Though he might be the loyal servant of King Dedede, Banana Waddle Dee doesn’t really mind Kirby. He actually becomes friends with Kirby eventually in the franchise! Sometimes Banana Waddledee cheers Kirby on, sometimes he helps him out in some missions. In some games like Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Banana Waddledee becomes the cream puff’s faithful companion!

Gooey

Gooey

Gooey is a small blue-colored blob with eyes and a mouth. Sure, Gooey might be part of the Dark Matter race (beings that want to take control over everything), but he’s actually Kirby’s friend. This cutie actually helps Kirby in a lot of missions and games!

Meta Knight

Meta Knight

Wearing grey armor, Meta Knight is Kirby’s rival. He is often described to have a “devilishly cool look that sets him apart from the rest.” Though he tries to stop Kirby just like King Dedede, Meta Knight is always thinking about ways to make Dream Land better. Lately in more recent Kirby games Meta Knight has been friendlier with Kirby!

Waddle Dees

Waddle Dee

Hailing from Dream Land, Waddle Dees are the basic enemies in most Kirby games. They have red and orange pear-shaped faces and they have yellow feet.

KIRBY STARS IN ANIME!

Did you know that Kirby also has his very own anime series? In English it’s called Kirby: Right Back at Ya! while in Japan the show is called Kirby of the Stars. It spanned four complete seasons with original creator Masahiro Sakurai supervising the production. Loyal Kirby fans loved the show!

WHERE CAN I BUY KIRBY GOODIES?

Kirby Goodies

Everyone wants a piece of Kirby! Luckily, Nintendo is more than happy to oblige. Aside from producing a whole lot of Kirby games, the Japanese company also comes up with a ton of Kirby merchandise for you to decorate your gaming room with!

KIRBY’S DREAM FACTORY

Kirby has his own special store somewhere in Pupupu Land (well, actually in Tokyo, Osaka, and Shizuoka) called KIRBY’S DREAM FACTORY! Decked out in pink, the store has a lot of rare Kirby plushies, Kirby figures, and more Kirby goodies that collectors can add to their haul. Not only that, but the shop is also pretty Instagrammable too.

KIRBY COLLABORATIONS

Kirby Collab

Kirby is a super-friendly cream puff. That’s why it shouldn’t come as a surprise to see the cutie working together with others. Sometimes he collaborates with artists, sometimes he collaborates with big names in the food industry like Boss Coffee!

LET'S CHILL AT KIRBY CAFE!

Hoping to relax at a cafe with Kirby? Then get ready and pack for a trip to Japan! Nintendo’s poof ball is so popular that he has his own restaurant chain in Japan called Kirby Cafe. One can be found in Sky Tree in Tokyo while the other can be found in Hakata. These restaurants serve kawaii Kirby-themed meals, drinks, and desserts. They also have Kirby cafe collectibles too! The Kirby cafe is so cute and popular that we've named it one of our Top Five Character Cafes in Japan

Kirby Pretty Girls

So there you have it! Kirby is a kawaii gaming character that serves cuteness and power. This cutie draws people in with its adorableness and its surprising strength and versatility.
